In Common with Corazon Aquino
As is known, Corazon Aquino, who served as the eleventh president of the Philippines during the period 1986-1992, passed away on August 1, 2009. She was the first female president of the country. Declaring herself as a housewife, she led what proved to be a turning point in Philippine history when the people power revolution brought about the restoration of democracy after more than 20 years of dictatorship. Hence, the Filipino people power movement has been an inspiration for many countries, specifically in Asia.
I had the opportunity to witness her presidential campaign when I went to visit the Philippines in November 1985 - February 1986. I was amongst those who listened to her captivating speech. I was amongst millions who hoped that the election would bring about political improvement in the country.
Corazon Aquino's non-violent leadership of the historical Filipino uprising earned her a Nobel Peace Prize nomination in 1986. The same year, she was named "Woman of the Year" by Time Magazine. She was given many recognitions, amongst them one for promoting international understanding, the same received by the historical icon Nelson Mandela. She was named one of 65 Great Asian Heroes along with Mahatma Gandhi and Ang San Suu Kyi. She was declared one of 15 World Champions of Democracy together with Lech Walesa and Vaclav Havel.
With her passing away, Time Magazine dedicated a page in her honor titled "The Saint of Democracy - With People Power, Corazon Aquino inspired the world".
I am very much honored to share two things with her. Like Corazon Aquino, I am a Filipino by birth and a member of the woman organization Zonta International.
