Basket for Men and Help for Women in 16 Days

In a meeting, Carina Martinsson, the Club Master of Sundsvall Zonta Club, presented one of her ideas to the members. The proposal was to get together and have fun, and, as always, raise money for a good cause. Once, it was a hockey game. This time it was a match of basketball game between Sundsvall's Dragons, 2009 Swedish Basketball Champion, and Luleå's Plannja, a one-time title holder, too.

On November 24, my fellow Zontians got informed on the rules of basketball, and watched the Dragons dribble and shoot basketball against Plannja players. Surely, it was enjoyable to see a good game, especially with the thought of being able to help women in need.

As decided by the Club's Steering Committee, the amount raised by members based on the price of the ticket bought will be donated to Sundsvall's Kvinnojouren. Kvinnojouren is an organization whose purpose is to help and assist women subjected to violence. This is part of Sundsvall's Zonta Club's action in connection with the observance of 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence.

16 Days of Activism

The 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence commences on November 25, International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, and ends on December 10, International Human Rights Day.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon launched the multi-year campaign "UNiTE to End Violence against Women", www.un.org/en/women/endviolence. The effort is from 2008 to 2015 with the aim to prevent and eliminate violence against the female gender in all parts of the world.

As a contribution to advance the Secretary-General's UNiTE, the United Nations Development Fund for Women, UNIFEM, http://www.unifem.org/, started a global call for action "Say NO - UNiTE to End Violence Against Women". Join and be counted. http://www.saynotoviolence.org/

Monthly meeting at Exitours

The Club's monthly meeting was hosted by Anna-Lena Huss Nyström at Exitours Resebyrån last November 9. (Click on any picture to enlarge it.)

Anna-Lena owns and manages Exitours which is one of the businesses she have and one of the few privately owned travel agencies in Sweden. Exitours is located in Sundsvall's city center.

Prior to dinner, club members mingled and gave Zonta International a toast in connection with the organization's 90th foundation anniversary last November 8.

Dinner was served at Dolcetto, a little cozy Italian restaurant.
